The New York Times Lists ‘Harlots’ as One of 15 Shows to Watch this Year

Harlots, a new series set in 18th century London about a woman’s challenge balancing motherhood with her role as a brothel owner is due to air on ITV Encore this spring and has been listed as one to watch by The New York Times. Produced by Monumental Television and starring an all female writing and directing team, the series aims to offer a female gaze on the topic, hence the casting, which makes it one of the first British scripted series headed exclusively by women.

Starring Samantha Morton and Lesley Manville, Monumental Pictures founders, Alison Owen and Debra Hayward, spoke of their excitement about Harlots.

“It was very important to us from the beginning to make it about the female gaze,” Owen began, with Hayward adding, “We really set out to get all female directors. We got the best of the best in the UK, and it has influenced the show exactly the way we wanted it to.”

Industry Media provided Monumental Television with legal and business affairs support on the production, including the broadcaster deals, financing deal, cast and other key creative contracts.
