Armed with a versatile voice, powerful stage presence, raw, unfettered talent, and a unique lyrical perspective, he has quickly secured his status as one of the most buzzing and fastest-rising independent artists in contemporary pop music. And now, Bobby Saint is stepping into the limelight via his forthcoming Unholy EP, out May 19 via Shoot to Kill Music.
Unholy sees the Barbados-born, Los Angeles-based Saint in his latest artistic evolution and ushers in a new era for the singer. Serving as his debut solo release, the EP allows Saint a fresh frame of mind and a clean slate. Now with complete creative control over his sound, Saint sings and plays guitar on all five of the tracks in addition to writing and producing the EP—he takes a no-holds-barred approach where no style or genre is
On opener “Big Shoes,” a confident Saint struts with gusto as he mixes piercing piano balladry with blossoming crescendos amidst a cinematic backdrop and backed by powerfully soulful vocals. “Fire & Gold” turns an acoustic beauty into a full-fledged, edgy rocker, complete with proper guitar solos. Elsewhere, Saint charms and woos on the appropriately titled “Sexy,” a passionate R&B romp through the heart and libido that drips of love, lust, and desire, while title track “Unholy” twangs with sinful playfulness over blues rock attitude. Saint funks out on closer “Use It,” which meshes a bouncy, R&B-tinged bassline with a pop-infused, instantly gripping chorus and neo-soul grooves.
Saint developed his vast musical chops and diverse sounds after years working behind the scenes as a signed writer with music publishing and recording rights giant BMG, where he flexed his songwriting and production skills on a multitude of releases from top-tier acts. Personally, he also draws major influences from an extensive roll call of musical heroes, from contemporaries like Anderson Paak, Gallant, and Miguel, to icons like Prince and Al Green. Still, the Bobby Saint sound is all his own.
“Unholy is centered around an idea from my distant past, the holy and the profane, and its effects on freedom, growth, spirituality, views of self, city nights and love,” says Saint. “For me, it’s about keeping the fires lit and raising human consciousness, while bowing down to the greats: Bob Marley, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye. This is me going forward with only love and the funk in my heart.”
The world first met Bobby Saint, the artist, via the Upload EP (June 2016), his collaborative project with electronic production duo Penthouse Penthouse, who are members of the illustrious Los Angeles-based beat-making collective, Team Supreme.
On Upload, Saint and Penthouse Penthouse join their creative individualities to design a blissed-out audio trip through sexually charged motifs, sensual imagery and personal liberation. Upon its release, Upload garnered critical acclaim from a number of tastemaker media outlets, including Noisey (VICE), Pigeons & Planes (Complex), Mixmag, Live Nation’s Ones to Watch, HYPETRAK/HYPEBEAST Music, Indie Shuffle, Dancing Astronaut, Your EDM, Nest HQ (Skrillex/OWSLA) and many more. Upload also received support from multinational clothing and lifestyle retailer Urban Outfitters as well as BBC 1Xtra, where DJ and curator Jamz Supernova highlighted the release as one of her Top 5 EPs of the Week. Additionally, lead single “69’ Camaro” peaked at #7 on the overall Hype Machine charts, while title track “Upload” reached #12. Based on the success of Upload, the trio also secured high-profile performances at the influential Low End Theory weekly event series in Los Angeles as well as a coinciding performance at the Low End Theory Festival at the Shrine Expo Hall and Grounds (July 2016). They followed up with a supporting slot on Mr. Carmack’s Immersion Tour during December 2016.
Elsewhere, Bobby Saint dominates across numerous collaborations where he guests as a featured vocalist, including “Outlaws” (PLS&TY), “Twisted Love” (Bastion), “Six A.M.” (Pantyraid) and “Black Bamboo” by With You, the latest project from celebrated electronic producer Switch.
With Unholy, Bobby Saint is finally ready to let his true self resonate as the bona fide solo artist he’s developed within throughout the years. Bobby Saint is the voice. Unholy is his message. And now is his time.
