Take That

details

Take That is one of the most successful British pop groups of all time. The band have won eight BRIT Awards, five Ivor Novellos, achieved twelve UK Number One singles, seven UK Number One albums, have sold 45 million records and more than seven and half million concert tickets.

Today Take That consists of three members: Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen.  The band was formed in 1989 with an original line-up that also included Robbie Williams and Jason Orange.

Catapulted to international stardom after they first formed, with three consecutive Number One studio albums and eight Number One singles in the UK alone, Take That performed to sell out venues across the world, becoming particularly successful in the UK, Europe and Asia. In 1995, Robbie announced that he was leaving the band, with the remaining four members reduced to a four-piece. Gary, Howard, Mark and Jason continued to record one last single, ‘Never Forget’, before disbanding completely in 1996.

Nearly ten years later, after the release of a documentary (that focussed on the band’s early career) and the release of their greatest hits album, Take That reformed to embark on a 2006 reunion tour across the UK. The band then released comeback single ‘Patience’ and their fourth studio album ‘Beautiful World’ in the same year, before following up with album ‘The Circus’ in 2008 which sold over two million copies in the UK.

As a four-piece, Take That became incredibly successful, notching up a string of hit records across the UK and Europe. Their next album, ‘Progress’, saw the return of original band member Robbie Williams to huge fanfare and critical acclaim and became of fastest selling album of the 21st century and second fastest album in British history. Likewise their tour, ‘Progress Live’, became the fastest selling tour of all time in the UK.

Robbie subsequently returned to his solo career while Take That went back into the studio to record their next album ‘III’. During recording Jason Orange announced that he was leaving the band and Take That continued as a three-piece, releasing the album in November 2014. ‘III’ was the most pre-ordered in Amazon UK history, going straight to Number One on release and became Take That’s seventh Number One album.

At the start of 2017 Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen conceived and appeared in a BBC TV talent show called ‘Let It Shine’ which aimed to find a boy band to be the stars of a new musical. The show was the BBC’s most successful music show launch in nearly a decade. The winners of the show are currently starring in ‘The Band’ a musical that features the songs of Take That, which is also produced by Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen and Robbie Williams.

Take That released their eighth album ‘Wonderland’ in March 2017 (their second as a three-piece), before embarking on a UK arena and stadium tour ‘Wonderland Live’ in May 2017.
