Born in Preston, Josh grew up in Chorley where he started playing rugby league for Chorley Panthers at the age of six.

Having represented North West counties and Lancashire by the age of 16, Josh moved clubs to join the famous amateur rugby league club Wigan St Patricks, playing a season in their U18s side where he was spotted by Wigan Warriors' academy coach John Pendlebury and handed an academy contract with the Warriors aged just 17.

Josh was loaned out at the start of the 2010 season to further his development, first to Blackpool Panthers and then to Hull Kingston Rovers for whom he made his Super League debut, scoring five tries in five appearances, including a hat-trick against Castleford.

Having been recalled to Wigan Warriors, Josh made his Super League debut for the Warriors as a replacement on the 22nd August 2010 against Hull Kingston Rovers, scoring the first of many tries in Wigan colours.

The 2011 season was Josh's breakthrough year at Wigan as he scored 27 Super League tries (second only to Sam Tomkins) to make the right-wing position his own. He was named the Club's Young Player-of-the-Year and his form earned selection for England Knights, playing against France and Cumbria.

In July 2012 Josh scored a try for the England select team against the Exiles, and in Super League he was virtually unstoppable as Wigan finished the 2012 regular season at the top of the pile, with Josh finishing as the leading scorer with 31 tries.

Josh made his full international debut on 27th October 2012, scoring four tries as England thrashed Wales 80-12 in Wrexham. Josh also started the final of the end-of-season triangular tournament, scoring a try against France as England won 48-4.

In the opening game of the 2013 Super League season, Josh picked up where he left off in 2012, scoring as Wigan beat Salford 0-42 away from home.
