The Million Pound Drop returns

Davina returns with The Million Pound Drop live this summer to Channel 4, with players facing one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

Players must must try to keep hold of a million pounds in real cash. But in an exciting new final twist to the show, they can double the money they've managed to keep and walk away with a life-changing amount of cash.

There are now only seven questions between the players and a fortune, but it's going to be tougher than ever to make it to the final question - one false move could literally see thousands of pounds drop through the floor.

Whoever gets to the end and wins the cash will then be faced with one of the hardest decisions of their lives on live TV – risk it all on one last question for a chance to double their winnings.

Davina says of the show: "Woop Woop we're returning with a new series of The Million Pound Drop Live! I love hosting the show, it is always incredibly tense and these new twists are going to make it even more nail-biting. Is anyone brave enough to risk it all for the chance to double their money? We'll just have to wait and see!"

The new series starts Friday 14th June on Channel 4.

Brought to you by the award-winning Big Talk Productions and Popper Pictures, Give Out Girls is a sharply observed, character led sitcom about a gang of four girls (and a couple of guys) who work in the world of ‘promotions’. Who are those girls out at 7am, dressed as light bulbs, giving you stuff you don’t want? It’s a world that’s instantly recognisable to anyone who’s ever done a job simply to pay the rent. It’s about working hard at avoiding hard work and how your colleagues by default become your mates.

Fellow promo girls include Zoe (Miranda), a passive aggressive, self-loving dancer from New Zealand and Poppy (Cariad Llloyd) who has her own unique way of looking at the world, she loves to party and is prone to obsessions when it comes to boys. The team work under Debbie, (Tracy-Ann Oberman) who’s in her mid-40s. She’s a Northern, menopausal trouser-suit wearing, nightmare boss of the company.

Also joining the cast is singer, Diana Vickers in her first television role. Vickers plays Gemma, the baby of the group, who is bright and enthusiastic with a naive view of the world.

The series starts filming in and around Manchester in May 2013.

Clare Balding wins a Special Award at this year's BAFTAs

BAFTA presented Clare with the Special Award at 2013's Arqiva British Academy Television Awards this weekend.

Presented in honour of Richard Dimbleby, this year’s Special Award recognises the year’s most important personal contribution on screen in factual television, and is being given in appreciation of her incredible dedication to presenting across entertainment and sporting events.

"Thank you so much, this is extraordinary, " Clare said on the night. "When I was a child I dreamed of winning an Olympic Gold Medal, and I wanted to be on the podium with my pony, tears streaming down my face as the National Anthem played.

"But I never, ever in my life had the temerity to imagine that one day BAFTA would honour me with an award named after Richard Dimbleby, one of Britain's finest ever all-round presenters. And I could not be prouder."

Andrew Newman, Chairman of BAFTA’s Television Committee, said: “Clare's body of work over the last 13 years speaks for itself, but it was through her expert coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games that Clare became a national treasure, who with her warmth and charisma helped bring the country together as we celebrated in Team GB and Paralympic GB's success. She is a trusted and intelligent live presenter with an ability to transcend genre, and we’re delighted to honour her contribution to television at this year’s BAFTA ceremony on 12 May.”

Since Clare made her television debut in 1995 introducing highlights at Royal Ascot, she has gone on to present some of the most prestigious events in the world, including five Olympic Games, four Paralympic Games, Horse Racing on Channel 4 and Crufts.

Her expert knowledge across a wide range of topics has made her a trusted and admired television personality, proven by her coverage of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Last presented in 2006 to Jamie Oliver, the Award’s previous recipients have included Jon Snow, Andrew Marr, Jeremy Paxman and Kate Adie.

Richard and Judy are launching their latest Book Club, exclusively with WHSmith, alongside a brand new website that will offer readers a chance to engage online and provide an ultimate and exclusive guide to all the Book Club titles.

The Book Club podcast has been hitting record numbers of downloads for the past two years (over 900,000 to date) and the new website - whsmith.co.uk/richardandjudy - offers a forum to exchange thoughts with Richard and Judy and the authors themselves; plus an abundance of additional content that covers everything you will ever need to know about the duo’s favourite Book Club books and authors.

The Summer list includes seven debut novels: Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann – The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker; This is How it Ends by Kathleen MacMahon; The Universe versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence; The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman; The Sea Change by Joanna Rossiter and The Sea Sisters by Lucy Clarke.

The titles completing the list of ten, promoted every week in-store are: Close my Eyes by Sophie Mckenzie, the eBook phenomenon Natural Causes by James Oswald and The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Simon Mawer.

“As a reader, few things beat finding a new author to read, enjoy and recommend to other people,” Richard says. “We’ve experienced the excitement of being there at the beginning of a word of mouth bestseller with so many of our debut novelists – being among the first to read the book that everyone will soon be talking about."

“As a recent debut novelist myself, I know how exciting as well as daunting it is to have people read your work,” Judy adds. “So from the other side of the fence, I’m really excited to reveal this diverse list for the summer - rest assured every one of them is an absolute page-turner. You won’t be able to put them down!”

Watch the trailer below for a taste of the new series, and read Stephen's Q&A on what he's looking forward to the most this year.

How does it feel to be back presenting Britain’s Got More Talent?

I'm over the moon! Seven years in and the show is still going strong - we're back
with a brand-new series and I can safely say, from the auditions, Britain does indeed,
have talent! I honestly believe this could be the strongest year yet.

What type of act would you like to see win this year?
I've always said I want a magician to win the competition, but now I think perhaps
that’s getting less likely. The good news for me, as I love variety, is a speciality act
could be this year's winner.

What is new about Britain’s Got More Talent this year?
In the new series of Britain's Got More Talent, we have a brand-new game with David
Walliams, called David vs. Goliath. It's a gladiator-style game where they compete
against each other with ridiculous challenges. We also have a new series of games
for Ant vs. Dec – they are as competitive as ever! And we've got more access to the
judges that we've ever had which is great.

What are your favourite acts from over the years?
My top three acts from over the years have to be Susan Boyle, Diversity and George
Sampson.

Can you give us a few clues about what to expect from some of the acts this year?
This year we have more variety than ever, including ventriloquists, comedians, and
magicians.

What are your favourite things about the BGT judging panel?
My favourite thing about the judging panel is how passionate they are and how they stand
their ground. They all bring something different and a lot of experience in their field.

What are your favourite things about presenting Britain’s Got More Talent?
The thing I love about presenting Britain's Got More Talent is that you
can definitely expect the unexpected and we've definitely got some of the oddest acts on
ITV2 this year.

Sonali Shah is to join Colin Jackson, Denise Lewis, Phil Jones and Katherine Merry to report along the course of this year's Virgin London Marathon for the BBC.

Jonathan Edwards presents live coverage of the 33rd annual London Marathon as world-class runners and 36,000 fundraisers compete in one of the world’s most famous races, with race commentary from Steve Cram, Brendan Foster, Paul Dickenson, six-time London Marathon wheelchair race winner Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson and marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe.

The elite men’s race has attracted all three marathon medallists from last summer’s Olympics and six of the 10 fastest runners of all time. In addition, Britain's double Olympic champion Mo Farah will get his first taste of an elite marathon when he runs the first half of the course as a fact-finding mission ahead of his full marathon debut next year.

Farah will be up against the likes of marathon world record holder Patrick Makau, Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich, world champion and Olympic silver medallist Abel Kirui, and reigning London champion Wilson Kipsang.

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tiki Gelana defends the title she won last year but faces tough opposition from the likes of Kenyan world champion Edna Kiplagat and compatriot Priscah Jeptoo, who won silver at the London Olympics.

Great Britain’s four-time London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist David Weir and compatriot Shelly Woods will defend their wheelchair titles.

The day for the majority of runners though will be about setting personal bests or simply completing the 26.2 mile course. We will hear from some of those who are running for the many charities who benefit from one of the great events in the British sporting calendar.

For more information on the event visit the Virgin London Marathon website.

Davina to host Five Minutes to a Fortune

Channel 4 have announced a brand new game show, Five Minutes to a Fortune, created and produced by Victory Television, and hosted by Davina McCall. The daily show will challenge teams of two to work as the perfect partnership to take home a life-changing amount of money - £50,000. On Saturday nights, the show will double the potential winnings to a £100,000 as two celebrities pit themselves against the clock to raise funds for charity.

Davina McCall says: “5 Minutes to a Fortune is one of those shows that has you clenching your buttocks from start to finish – I cannot wait to get started!”

Tom Beck, Commissioning Editor for Channel 4 Entertainment, says: “Five Minutes to a Fortune is a hugely exciting new format fronted by the best host in the business. It’s brilliantly simple to play, fiendishly difficult to win and simply gripping to watch. It’s tense and exciting, funny and unique.”

Victoria Ashbourne, Managing Director, Victory Television adds: “Unlike most game shows, the pressure really kicks in when the clock hits zero and the prize money literally drains away, coin by coin. With an exciting combination of both daytime and primetime shows to create, we can’t wait to bring this brand new series to life.”

The game is simple.

One member of the team will play five games, the other ‘the Timekeeper’ will control the game. The Timekeeper decides which categories their partner will play and more importantly how much time they’ll have to play each game. Each couple has five minutes to complete all five games.

Each game starts with eight categories on the board – each requires a range of skills and will vary every week. This is where we find out how well the couples know each other – is their partner a music fan, trivia junkie or comedy genius? Once the category has been decided, predicting how much of the five minutes to use for each challenge is crucial to keeping their fortune. When things get tough, the Timekeeper has two ‘Time Controls’; The Freeze Time, which stops the game for ten seconds, and the Emergency Stop, which aborts the challenge and replaces it with a new one.

Once the five games have been completed, the roles switch and the Timekeeper must play one final game to win the cash that is left in the hourglass. After choosing their category, the Timekeeper is required to name ten items from this area in the time it takes for the hour-glass to turn. Failing to complete the challenge in this time will again see their winnings drain away.

Five Minutes to a Fortune is being made for Channel 4 by Victory Television and has been commissioned by Tom Beck, Commissioning Editor for Entertainment at Channel 4.

The Hairy Bikers' Best of British returns for a second series

Si and Dave are back on BBC Two with their brand new series of Hairy Bikers’ Best of British, travelling the length and breadth of the country to explore our extraordinary culinary heritage.

What we cook and how we eat it tells us so much about our nation’s past. The Bikers will be getting hands on with our food history, trying the foods enjoyed by our ancestors as well as meeting today’s producers who are keeping our foodie traditions alive.

From our woodlands to our islands, our pork to our potatoes, every flavour of Britain has a story to tell. Through mouth-watering recipes and incredible archive footage, the Hairies bring these stories to life.

“Britain has some of the most prized produce, respected producers and pioneering chefs on the planet," Dave explains, "So, from field to fork, we really are world beaters. This comes down to our centuries of gastronomic excellence, perfecting our home grown ingredients and recipes as well as making the most of dishes we’ve imported from all over the world.”

Si adds: “We really are culinary magpies. There are few other food cultures which are such a melting pot of tastes, traditions and flavours, and the history of how our cooking has changed is fascinating.”

Whilst exploring this history the Bikers will meet with the country’s leading food historians who are able to bring centuries’ old recipes to life with skills and techniques which would otherwise be lost to history. They also meet the food heroes who are preserving our heritage dishes and ingredients as well as introducing modern British classics to our tables.

The boys will take us through some wonderful and very varied archive footage, clearly showing how our changing tastes are at the heart of social history. And they’ll be cooking up their own twists on some national classics in the Best of British kitchen – not least the ploughdue, a cross between a ploughman’s and a fondue!

Along the way the Bikers can't resist dipping in to TV history to watch some of the chefs and programmes that inspired them as cooks.

Each programme is themed, with subjects including Beef, Apples and Pears, Food and the Empire, Dairy and Shellfish. With more than 60 food heroes, over three hours of archive footage and 60 studio recipes, over four weeks, the series builds a lively, nostalgic and comprehensive picture of British social history through
food, from our Iron Age ancestors right up to the present day.

The series captures all the warmth and fun of the Hairies - friends for more than two decades - with a fresh, down-to earth approach to cooking and a contagious enthusiasm for what they do...

Don't miss the Hairy Bikers Best of British on BBC Two on Monday 1st April at 7pm.

Judy Finnigan's best-selling novel Eloise goes to paperback

Judy’s debut novel, set against the Gothic backdrop of a ghostly Cornwall, became the fastest selling debut hardback of 2012. Now own the Sunday Times bestseller in paperback from 28th February 2013.

“Yesterday I almost saw her. I was standing on the sun deck, looking out to sea, revelling in the unexpected warmth of the February sun. A butterfly trembled on a nearby buddleia and suddenly I smelled her perfume. She wasn't there, of course. How could she be when I had seen her lying in her coffin just two weeks ago, the day before she was buried, her casket surrounded by the scented candles she loved? She lay in Cornish ground now. She was a daughter, a wife, a mother. She was my friend. But what secrets did Eloise take to her grave?"

Compulsively-readable and haunting, Judy’s debut novel is a gripping study of loss and grief.

Reviews for Eloise:

“Exudes a deep and soulful sense of place. Romantic and rain-lashed, du Maurier's Cornwall haunts the pages of Eloise as powerfully as the spirit of the elusive heroine herself. A stirring and intriguing read” (Louise Candlish)

“Judy Finnigan's gripping début novel captures the mystery and menace of Cornwall in glorious gothic style” (Liz Fenwick)

“Highly readable, incredibly moving in parts, and with wonderful echoes of Daphne Du Maurier, Eloise had me turning pages late into the night” (Dorothy Koomson)

“A moving meditation on grief, family bonds, motherhood and female friendship” (Sunday Express)

“A haunting, pacy page-turner, with a real ghostly feel - a must read” (Fabulous Magazine)

“Impressive debut” (Woman & Home)

“A great first book from the Queen of the Book Club” (Essentials)

“A creepy ghost story . . . the real star of the book is Judy's beloved Cornwall - a wild beautiful backdrop to the tale that is almost a character in itself” (Bella)

Gethin Jones fronts the BBC Lifeline Appeal for Renewable World

Gethin is fronting this month’s BBC Lifeline Appeal for Renewable World, on BBC One Thursday 17th February at 4.20pm.

Renewable World has been selected for its on-going work in helping build a sustainable future for the residents of Nepal and is the first international charity to have ever been selected by the appeal. Gethin spent time earlier this year visiting vulnerable families from the area whose lives were changed by Renewable World’s charity work, including the instalment of water pumps which brings employment and money to desperately poor regions.

“Renewable World helps bring renewable energy to some of the poorest, most vulnerable people in the developing world” Gethin explains. “As well as affording others some basic comforts we take for granted, energy also gives people access to healthcare and education, and the means to work their way out of poverty.”

During his visit, Gethin helped install pumps in a mountainous region where water was scarce and made life very difficult for local residents – but just one pump can change an entire village’s future.

“What amazes me is how far that water goes,” Gethin explains. “It starts by helping with nutrition. The locals can grow their own veg, they can feed their children, which means the children don’t have to work in the field, which means that they can go to school and get an education.

“And whilst all this is happening the parents are then saving money, providing themselves with an income, providing the community with an income that they can all invest in other areas and make a living. And they can get water all year round, not just for the 3 to 4 months that they could before. It’s a huge change for the better.”

You too can make a big difference with even a small donation - visit the BBC Lifeline Appeal to donate now and watch the show on BBC One Thursday 17th February at 4.20pm.

Holly and sister Kelly are fulfilling a lifetime dream by writing a series of children’s books together called L’Etoile, School for Stars.

This new series for young readers is set in a stage school, and follows the lives, friendships and dreams of stardom of the pupils. The first book in the series, First Term at L’Etoile, follows the journey of twin sisters Molly and Maria Fitzfoster as they enrol at L’Etoile.

The novels combine Holly’s runaway imagination and intimate knowledge of the entertainment industry, with Kelly’s creative mind and love of writing. Together, the sisters have created a glittering series of friendship and adventure.

“Kelly and I were both a couple of drama queens growing up, always putting on little shows at home for our parents and making up stories together," Holly says. "The lovely experience of actually sitting down and creating L'Etoile, School for Stars has brought back so many 'make-believe' memories for us, which would have otherwise been long forgotten. We hope the readers enjoy the world we have created.”

Kelly adds: “It's been a life-long dream for Holly and I to one day write our own children's story, and to have the opportunity to work this closely as sisters in our thirties, on a project like this, is just so special. Writing L’Etoile has re-awakened the world of friendship and make-believe we shared growing up, for us to now be able to share it with other children. We hope the books are as joyfully received, as they were joyfully written.”

First Term at L’Etoile will be published on the 20th June 2013 by Orion Children’s Books, followed by the next instalment in the series, Second Term at L’Etoile, later in the summer.

Mr Selfridge opens for business on ITV1

Mr Selfridge opens its doors for business on ITV1 on Sunday nights at 9pm. Based on the book Shopping, Seduction and Mr Selfridge by author Lindy Woodhead, the drama follows the escapades of American entrepreneur Harry Selfridge, who set out to make shopping as thrilling as sex in turn of the century Britain.

Award-winning actor Jeremy Piven, best known for his role as Ari Gold in Entourage, will lead the cast as Mile a Minute Harry, the pioneering and reckless mogul who created Selfridges - a theatre of retail where any topic or trend that was new, exciting, entertaining - or sometimes just eccentric - was showcased.

Created by multi-award winning writer Andrew Davies, the drama is set in 1909 London, at a time when women were revelling in a new feeling of freedom and modernity – a feeling Harry indulged in his lavish department store. The hidden history of women will be told through the innovations and spectacular events staged within the store, be it fashion, cosmetics, technology or domestic affairs.

All of this will play out against the colourful personal life of Harry Selfridge - a family man with a doting wife and four children - who lived life in the fast line, spending his spare time gambling and womanising with glamorous film stars and show girls.

Andrew Davies and his writing team have built upon the most fascinating aspects of Harry’s real life and used them as a spring-board to create a big, glamorous city story, featuring both fictional and real characters you’re bound to fall in love with. Set against the decadent background of a country on the brink of social upheaval, this is a period drama firmly set in the advent of modernity.
